Nowadays, Canon is one of the best manufacturers of digital and optical photo equipment worldwide. In the 1970s, the corporation started to penetrate into other market spheres and develop office appliances, TV sets, and medical equipment. Having the headquarters in Japan, the company opened offices in the USA and Europe. After the World Waw II was over, Canon started to conquer the global market of photo equipment. The government supported young entrepreneurs and prohibited imports of foreign photo equipment into the country. In 1937, it became a stock company called Precision Optical Industry Co (due to changes inside the company, its final name will soon become Canon Inc.). Soon after this event, the first Canon factory was founded. It was called Kwanon, after the goddess of mercy in Japanese mythology. In 1934, the engineers released the first camera with a 35-mm lens. Takeshi Mitarai sponsored this research and even became the CEO. Young engineers’ aim was to create a Japanese camera to compete with a market leader of that time – Germany. It was established in 1933 in Tokyo by two friends - Saburo Uchida and Goro Yoshida. “You can Canon” is the company's motto and when we hear it, we all agree that Canon can! This renowned corporation was founded as a small research lab called Precision Optical Instruments.
